    Hi busy book rappers,

What a terrific job you did responding to Rap Point 3!

We were all able to think of the many ways in which Bear and Chook are different – both in their appearance, feelings and actions. I especially enjoyed reading your thoughts about the similarities between Bear and Chook; the very, very special friendship that they share and how they always care, support and encourage one another.

I was also very impressed with the many other books about bears, chooks, friendship and the sea that you have in your libraries! You must all be very keen readers and Library borrowers to be aware of so many titles!

I’m sure both Lisa and Emma were thrilled with your creative suggestions for future Bear and Chook titles! As I read your long lists of ideas, I could picture our favourite characters having fun on their new adventures! I especially liked the ideas for Bear and Chook to visit the Library! :-)

Like you, I’m hoping that Lisa and Emma decide to write a third Bear and Chook title, sometime in the future!

Now, sadly, we come to our last official week of the book rap. For our Rap Wrap Up, you need to think about:

    * What have you enjoyed about participating in this book rap?
    * What new skills have you developed?
    * What was the highlight of the book rap for you?

To post your response on our rap blog, please post here, on this Rap Wrap Up page, scroll down, then upload your message as a Comment.

Don’t forget to keep checking the Gallery and Author pages for updates from classes, and from Lisa and Emma. It’s great to view the beautiful artwork, photographs and slideshows made by students – and to read Emma & Lisa’s interesting comments.

I look forward to reading your Rap Wrap Up messages over this next week!

    Happy rapping! ;-)

  2.   Manly Village 1S Rap Stars Says:

    Hello rappers,

We have adored reading Bear and Chook so much that it’s sad to say goodbye! However, we plan to make “hanky hats” for our families as part of our Christmas craft :)

In reply to the Rap Wrap Up questions, we thoroughly enjoyed re-writing the Bear and Chook sequence, reading other schools’ comments, listening to Lisa and Emma read the story, answering the rap questions each week and watching the slideshows made by Penrith P.S.

We now know how to log onto and enter comments in a blog, as well as understanding what a blog is. We have learnt new words from reading Bear and Chook and have learnt what a simile is, eg. “The wind is as warm as honey toast”. We have also written our own similes.

The highlight of the book rap was going to the library each Monday afternoon with Mrs Wu and Mrs Neill and talking about the funny, clever and courageous Bear and Chook! We look forward to their third adventure.

    Bye for now!

  3.   1W @ Caddies Creek Public School Says:

    Hello fellow Rappers,

Our most enjoyable part of this Rap was thinking about more adventures and new careers for Bear and Chook, talking about Bear and Chook’s adventures and reading the comments from the many other Rappers. We also just really liked reading the books. We had fun writing new titles. We had our own class Bear and Chook and so we have loved their company.

We had a special project that we would like to share. We wrote our own book!!!! THE ADVENTURES OF BEAR AND CHOOK BY 1W!

We have also learnt that “reading different stories can take us to different places that we can only imagine” (Lachlan M). We also learnt that Bear and Chook have been on so many adventures that we can’t choose our favourite. We have learnt that reading is so good to do because you can learn new words. Lastly we have learnt more about using a blog to share our ideas.

The best part of doing the Rap has been coming up with new adventures for Bear and Chook.

Cheerio, Aloha, Au Revoir, Hast La Vista Rappers, until we meet again next year.

  4.   1S and 3/5L @ Caddies Creek Public School Says:

    Hi rappers,

We have enjoyed learning more about the Bear and Chook books. We enjoyed discussing the ways that Bear and Chook are similar and different. It was fun to make new titles for Bear and Chook. Class 1S created their own Bear and Chook stories. We have enjoyed working with a partner on the bank of library computers to read messages from other schools. Our two classes enjoyed working together as a team.

Our oral reading skills have improved as we read messages on the IWB and on the bank of computers. We have learned a lot about how authors and illustrators work together to create a book. We have learned more about using a blog to share our ideas.

The main highlights of the rap have been:
    * thinking of new titles
    * brainstorming new careers for Bear and Chook
    * discussing similarities and differences between Bear and Chook
    * following Lisa’s language patterns
    * learning more about Bear and Chook.

Thank you for reading our messages on the blog. Hope to rap again with you next year.

  5.   1A and K/6S @ Caddies Creek Public School Says:

    Hello smart rappers,

We have really enjoyed going on the library bank of computers to read and select our favourite blog messages from other rappers. We have also enjoyed reporting back about the messages in our sharing circles. Our two classes loved watching Penrith PS PowerPoints, the Frog and Toad video and the How to Draw a Bear cartoon.

Other things we have loved are discussing the similarities and differences between Bear and Chook, reading both books closely and viewing the video of Lisa and Emma reading Bear and Chook by the Sea. We have loved collecting our own Bear and Chook characters and creating artworks inspired by Bear and Chook.

By participating in the Rap, we have developed our oral reading skills and our comprehension. We think we are very clever because we now know how to log onto the ‘Book Rap’ website, navigate around and post our own messages on the blog.

The highlights of being involved in the ‘Bear and Chook Book Rap’ have been:
    * being rappers
    * being rap detectives – having to work with a buddy to choose our favourite blog messages and then reporting back to our class mates
    * taking turns holding the library’s Bear and Chook
    * coming up with new Bear and Chook titles
    * seeing other schools’ Bear and Chook characters.

We have loved blogging with you all and we will really miss rapping with you :-(

  6.   KD & KL @ Caddies Creek Public School Says:

    Hi Rappers,

We have enjoyed reading the other schools’ messages and getting to hold the library’s Bear and Chook while we read. Also looking closely at both of the stories and having them read by many different people, especially Emma and Lisa. We have enjoyed looking at books in a different way. Our two classes enjoyed thinking of new adventures for Bear and Chook and talking about Bear and Chook being friends. We’ve enjoyed sharing our ideas with other schools and even belly dancing in the library!

We’ve learnt to read with more expression and we have learnt new words by sounding them out. We now look more carefully at the pictures when we are reading.

We have enjoyed using the interactive whiteboard to post and read messages and watching our teachers type the messages. We enjoyed watching the Powerpoint presentations which we have never seen before in Kindergarten.

    The highlights for us were-
    * watching Lisa and Emma’s video
    * thinking of new jobs for Bear and Chook
    * reading and sharing our thoughts about both books
    * doing the belly dancing with the procedure Powerpoints
    * KJ @CCPS’s Powerpoint about Bear and Chook coming to sport
    * looking closely at the pictures
    * colouring in Bear and Chook pictures.

We are feeling sad about the rap finishing :-(
We hope to rap again with you next year.

  7.   Kindy and 1DL Rappers Says:

    Hi rappers,

Kindy and 1DL Rappers, at Lakemba PS, liked the stories Bear and Chook and Bear and Chook by the Sea. When we were asked which story was our favourite, most of us liked Bear and Chook by the Sea because of the part where Bear rode a wave.

The pictures on the page where Bear was on the wave were the best because of the picture of Bear doing a tumbleturn in the water. It was action. Everyone likes stories about friends and water, but this water is different as it is the sea.

We found another story, Lucy Goosey, and read that because Lucy Goosey also gets scared like Chook does.

We have picture books we like to read.
from the Kindy Rappers at Lakemba Public School.

  8.   KS & KJ @ Caddies Creek Public School Says:

    Hi Rappers,

We have enjoyed writing our own Bear and Chook stories at home, reading other rappers’ messages on the blog and watching the different Powerpoint presentations of Bear and Chook. We enjoyed visiting the library and working with Mrs Scheffers on the blog. Our two classes enjoyed thinking of new titles for Bear and Chook. We really liked Lisa and Emma reading us Bear and Chook by the Sea.

We have learnt to read with expression when we have read the rap messages. Our skills have improved with locating and selecting blog messages.

    The highlights are:-
    * watching the cartoon of how to draw a bear
    * phrases like “I want to go home!”
    * having our own Bear and Chook characters in class
    * making up new adventures for Bear and Chook
    * looking at Powerpoint presentations and photographs from other schools.

We hope to rap again next year. So goodbye for now,
KJ Jovial Rappers and KS Sensational Rappers @ CCPS ;-)

  9.   KK and KE @ Caddies Creek Public School Says:

    Hi fellow Rappers,

We’ve enjoyed all the rap activities every week. We’ve enjoyed watching the PowerPoints from the other schools, reading the messages from other schools, thinking of new ideas for adventures of Bear and Chook and working together with another class in the Library with Mrs. Scheffers. We love reading both of the books of Bear and Chook.

We have become better readers because we have learnt new words, read with expression and with understanding. We’ve learned how to use the IWB to read and to respond to blog messages.

The highlights of the rap are:
    1. learning so much about both Bear and Chook
    2. watching the video of Lisa Shanahan and Emma Quay
    3. using the phrase from Chook: “Watch out!”
    4. creating new adventures for Bear and Chook.

We hope that Lisa and Emma will soon make another book about Bear and Chook because we have loved reading the two books so much. We hope to rap with you all again next year.

    Hello rappers,

We enjoyed doing the book rap. We hope that we will be doing another book rap soon. We enjoyed writing down what we would say on the blog each week. Some people in our class thought of wonderful ideas.

We were wondering what Bear has on his belly button when he is dancing on the stage by the pond. Some people think it is a pea and others think it is a diamond held on with stickytape.

    Hi rappers,

The students in our class liked:
    * Reading the stories
    * Putting our answers on the Internet. (Two of us got to look at the rap at home with our parents.)

We learned about friends, about how we help one another, be patient and kind, friends look out for one another.

Most of the students have enjoyed the storylines and continue to talking about all the things that Bear and Chook got up to in the books.

We are now going to look at the Gallery.

  13.   2Q Nowra Rappers Says:

    Hi rappers,

2Q have enjoyed reading the Bear and Chook stories. We liked looking at the pictures on the rap. We really liked participating in the book rap. The books were very good, thanks to the illustrator. We like looking at the pictures in the book. We liked looking at other schools’ comments. Bear and Chook books teach you about being good friends.

We think it was important to have questions each week, so we can learn more about friends, sequences, and also having a lot of fun.

We have already been using sequencing in our writing lessons before, but we hadn’t used a blog before. We learned about the security word, leaving our names and commenting to other students around Australia.

Our highlight was creating our own new story line for Bear and Chook’s next adventure.

    Sound out the words
    Follow with our eyes
Read a story over and over
Sometimes the words and pictures tell different stories

It was interesting getting to know other schools, hearing their messages and seeing the digital stories they have made.

It was good being part of the Book Rap. Meeting Emma and Lisa, and learning how to blog, were really interesting parts of the rap.

  27.   2X @ Hassall Grove Says:

We have enjoyed participating in the book rap. We loved being able to see the ideas of lots of different people in the blogs and we enjoyed writing about Bear and Chook. We also really loved the opportunity to get to know Bear and Chook and explore the books.

We have learnt that you can go onto the Internet to find other people who love the same things you do. It was good to be able to see all of our thoughts come up on the computer, not just in our books. We loved looking at the video story telling which has helped us to read with more expression. I WANT TO GO HOOOOMMMMEEEEEE!!!!

Highlights!!!! Oh how the hands went up! In the story, we liked when they had adventures and came home for honey toast. We also thought the descriptions in the book helped to make it more visual. A standout was when we had the opportunity to make a new section of the book to match our ideas! “Down a dark, creepy alley they crept…”

We thought of: “Where the wild things are” (beautiful pictures and will be a movie very soon), “Nobody owns the moon”, “Sunday Chutney”, “How to heal a broken wing”, “Leaf” (no words), “Aesop’s fables” (has lots of little stories inside) or “That’s not my brother”.

Goodbye from Kinder rappers at Penrith PS.

2B liked the book rap because the books were excellent – they were entertaining, funny and teach us about friendship.

We liked responding to the questions each week. We enjoyed making our own story titles up and we shared our titles with each other in the classroom.

We know that Bear and Chook is a narrative; we have written lots of narratives this term. We have learned about how to send comments through a blog.

Our favourite part of the book rap was that the whole thing was fun, and we got to talk about Bear and Chook. We liked reading the interesting stories. We liked expressing our opinions about the books.

Goodbye and thank you for reading our comments. Have a very nice Christmas and a Happy New Year. We hope to do this again next year, we hope to blog with you again in the future.

The highlight of the Book Rap was listening to Lisa and Emma read Bear and Chook by the sea because it was exciting to hear the real author reading the book.

We hope that there will be another Book Rap next year because it was lots of fun.

Goodbye all our fellow rappers. Happy reading for the holidays!

Hi and goodbye to all Bear and Chook rappers,

Doing this book rap we learnt that Bear and Chook are best friends. They like to have adventures.

What we liked most about book raps is that we could read what other children wrote.

Our favourite part was when Bear fell in the water. We really liked writing our own adventures and sound effects.

    Until next time,

1LP had a great time reading about Bear and Chook’s adventures. We can’t wait to participate in another book rap next year when we’re in Year 2!

    We know that:
Bear and Chook are best friends.
Bear and Chook respect and care for each other.
    They have fun together.

    We learned that:
    Book Raps are FUN.
You need books and a computer with the Internet.
    You need ideas and imagination.

Our favourite parts of the book rap were:
When we got to use our imagination and memory.
We liked reading the responses from other schools.
We loved using Google Earth to see where other schools were located.

We hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and a fantastic New Year!!

Xavier loved reading the two books about Bear and Chook.

    Hello rappers across Australia,

We know Bear and Chook very well now. We know that they are best friends. They love exploring and playing together. They like spending time with each other.

This was the first time we have taken part in a Book Rap. We got to use our imaginations and we all had a turn to do something.

We enjoyed reading the books. We loved writing messages each week. We really liked reading all of the other messages.

Thank you for the opportunity and we hope we can do another Book Rap next year.

    Hi book rappers,

Hasn’t our time on the book rap flown! What a fun time we’ve all had sharing our ideas and feelings about the Bear and Chook books! It’s been wonderful to look more closely at both the text and illustrations to gain a greater understanding of our two favourite book characters.

As a group, we’ve also shared new adventures for Bear and Chook; even in the form of funny digital stories, beautiful photographs and colourful artwork!

Our book rap has been greatly enriched by having both Lisa and Emma joining us! A HUGE thank you to both Lisa and Emma for taking the time to rap with us and to share their books and lives with us!

Thank you rappers, too, for your thoughtful Rap Wrap Up comments, which will be useful for planning future book raps. If you haven’t yet posted some of your comments and responses on the blog please still do so.

I hope we can all “meet again” next year to share in another exciting book rap program!

Wishing you a “beary” Merry Christmas! :-)

  38.   Lisa Shanahan, author, Says:

    Hello fellow rappers,

Oh dear! Is it really that time already?

Thank you so much for a wonderful month!

It’s been a delight to read your messages and to see the generous way you’ve shared your ideas with one another. I’ve loved the way you’ve encouraged the creativity of each other. It’s not so scary to try new things when you know your audience is appreciative and helpful!

I have loved dipping into the Gallery and watching your digital stories and looking at your photos and drawings and pictures of sequel book covers. I’ve seen things that I’d never even imagined, like the funny photo capturing Bear and Chook’s early years! I am sure that many of you will go on to be writers. But I also know that you will use technology in a way that I can only dream about!

I have loved reading your discussions — how Bear and Chook show they are good friends, your thoughts for their new adventures, the way Bear and Chook are the same and different. Your ideas and stories have made me think and wonder and dream. At times, you have made me laugh out loud! I’d never thought about Bear and Chook being plumbers before but of course there would be disasters in store for Chook and the toilet!

What new things have I learnt, thanks to you?

I had never really thought of the warm honey toast in Bear and Chook by the Sea as being a gift, but of course, it is! It was wonderful to be reminded that something as ordinary as honey toast, made in a certain way, can mean so much. A gift like that can mean as much as a hug or a kind word. I’ll have to remember that. The other thing you helped me learn about was Chook’s bravery. For a long time, I’ve thought that Bear was the really, truly brave one. Now I realise that Chook is extraordinarily brave, in a way that Bear might never have to be. It seemed true to me, like it did for some others in the rap, that Chook is brave the whole time!

There are so many great ideas for new Bear and Chook stories. I can’t possibly write them all. :( I know that you love Bear and Chook dearly and also that you know them intimately now, so perhaps you might like to take them on those many new adventures.

Thank so much for making this a special time. Thanks to your teachers and librarians, too, for their enthusiasm and passion. Thanks to Mrs Scheffers, Mrs Keane and Mr McLean for co-ordinating the rap so expertly and for inviting us to participate! It’s difficult to express our gratitude for the support you have given our work. And special thanks to Mr McLean for helping me wrangle technology. A big thanks to Emma, too; it was such fun to rap together. And I agree with Mimi from 1MHStars that the illustrations are the best thing ever!

Next year, when I am looking out the window while I write and I see the jacaranda trees, I am going to have an extra good November, remembering the time I spent with you!

But just now, unlike Bear and Chook,

“I don’t want to go home!”

    Thanks again,

    xLisa

    Hi Fellow Rappers,

We’ve really enjoyed being part of the Bear and Chook books rap. We’ve had some great discussions on the importance of being a good friend and how much fun it is to have adventures together. We reckon the Bear and Chook books are fantastic stories. They are fun and enjoyable to read about and the illustrations are really funny.

The book rap was great because:-
    * We joined in as a whole class to talk about the books.
    * We watched the video of Lisa and Emma reading Bear and Chook by the Sea. It made the story come alive for us. We also thought it was very funny the way they read it.
    * It was fabulous reading what other people thought about the books.
    * We enjoyed making up new titles for future stories. We look forward to reading them.

Thank you for giving us the chance to be part of the book rap. We definitely would like to be part of it next year.

    Goodbye for now,
    2A Eschol Park

A final hello from 1L at HPPS to the Book Rap,

1L enjoyed the fantastic Bear and Chook books. We liked following the patterns in the text.

We would be interested in doing another Book Rap now we know how they work.

Designing another book cover was our favourite activity.

It was nice when we got to see Lisa and Emma reading Bear and Chook by the Sea.

Some of us enjoyed reading the comments from other schools.

We learnt to use Library Enquiry and find other books that our library has. We also learnt to use the internet in a new way to post our blog.

Can you do another Book Rap next year? Please?!

A final hello from 1/2R Rappers at HPPS,

When we thought about what we had done over this term it was all excellent. The best parts were illustrating new book covers, seeing the photos and Powerpoints from other students and, of course, looking at all the wonderful adventures that Bear and Chook went on.

It was our first time on a Book Rap and we learnt how to blog and send a message for others to read. This was the best part about coming to library each week and seeing what others had written.

Thanks for all the work you have put into making this Book Rap happen. We can’t wait to be a part of another one.

    Bye bye from 1/2R Rappers,

    Hello all rappers,

We are sad the rap has come to an end as we have really enjoyed being part of it. Our favourite parts have been:

    - watching and listening to Lisa and Emma read Bear and Chook by the sea.
    - designing a front cover for a new Bear and Chook book.
    - reading both Bear and Chook books.
    - reading what other classes have written and looking at photos they have posted.

Thank you for such a good time with the rap.
Have a great Christmas and holiday.
