Groups of Stage 2 students at Penrith Public School have been experimenting with uploading PowerPoint presentations of the “Bear & Chook” adventures. These explanations, procedures and narratives were planned as storyboards, photographed, and turned into PowerPoint slideshows.

Hi everyone!
Do you want to learn to draw Chook?
There is a double page spread, “How to draw a chook” by Andrew Joyner, in the “School Magazine”, Orbit, September 2009 (pp 20-21).
Also “How to draw a bird” by Kim Gamble in the “School Magazine”, Countdown, October 2009 (pp 16-17). The main focus is chickens in that one, too!

Hi everyone,
The Stage 2 students from Penrith Public School have created some wonderful stories and procedures for us. They are excellent (and amusing) models to share with our ES1 and S1 students. Thank you, Ian.
These examples also demonstrate how easy it is to create stories for an online presence. Please check out the Creating digital stories sites and the How to create digital stories guides, over in Resources at:
http://www.schools.nsw.edu.au/raps/bearandchook/resources.htm
With these, and Ian’s suggestions above, you are bound to find a tool to create story sequences to share online. Remember to send them to the blog!
Cheers,

Hi happy Bear and Chook Rappers
Our Library was so inspired by Penrith PS’s Bear and Chook, that we now have our own Bear and Chook toy characters. They were photographed this morning relaxing with copies of both books.

Maybe your class or Library has their own polar bear and chook, too?
Happy blogging everyone

In a previous post, I mentioned two great “School Magazine” (NSW DET) articles that can teach students how to draw a chicken.
But, what if you’d rather draw Bear instead?
Well, author Ursula Dubosarsky (also known from the “School Magazine”) has written a funny picture book called “The Terrible Plop”, illustrated by Andrew Joyner (Penguin Books Australia). It’s about about a big, brown bear. In this short Youtube video (NSW DET schools, make sure you’re logged in under a teacher’s username and password), Andrew gives you some tips on how to draw a big, brown bear. (To turn him into a polar bear, why not try using a white crayon or paint on coloured paper?)
Happy drawing!

I was so pleased to see the photograph of Emily the Emperor Penguin meeting Chook at Pennant Hills PS. It’s great that Chook and Bear will be able to make new friends during this rap.
Congratulations on your digital story KJ at Caddies Creek PS. Chook looked a bit frightened playing French cricket with Bear.
I wonder if any other rappers have photographs or digital stories to share? We would love you to share them.

Hi rappers,
Kindergarten at Penrith PS thought of another adventure for “Bear and Chook”:
“Bear and Chook versus the aliens!”
In the morning, Chook was reading a book from the library called "Invaders from outer space". Chook was so busy reading, a small green alien from outer space crept up behind him.
Soon there were five aliens in the library! "Be careful Chook!" said Bear. "They might zap you!"
"ZZZZZZZZAP!"
"Oh, nooooooo!" exclaimed Chook. "Bear, you have turned into a three-eyed green alien from outer space!"
The little green aliens said, "We come in peace. Come back with us to be our King on the moon."
Chook said, "Please don’t go without me! I’ll be all by myself and I’d miss you."

Hi everyone,
North Sydney Demonstration School’s 2MT (affectionately now known as North Sydney Bears!) has had “a fabulous experience, so thank you for all of the work you have put in to make it happen!”
Last week, 2MT came up with lots of possible new adventures for Bear and Chook – and designed book covers to match. Attached are four examples of their work:
“Bear and Chook go back in time – by Julia”
* * * * *
“Bear and Chook in space – by Tsubasa”
* * * * *
“Bear and Chook go snorkelling – by Alex”
* * * * *
“Bear and Chook at Christmas – by Meg”

Hello from 1B Rappers at HPPS,
We have taken photos of our Bear and Chook to tell the story of:
Bear and Chook in the classroom.
Bear and Chook loved coming to school. In the morning they sat down to write a story.
After that they used counters to do maths.
After lunch Bear did some lovely handwriting and Chook did as well.
Then it came time for spelling.
Chook got all his words correct and was so excited that he bumped Bear off the chair.
“You just missed me, Chook – by a paw!”
We learnt how to frame a photo and also had fun looking at all the other ideas other book rpappers had. Bear and Chook is a great story!
Thanks for introducing us to the world of Book Rapping,
